We are approaching Juneteenth, our newest federal holiday. You have probably heard the story by now. Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1963, declaring that “All persons held as slaves …are and henceforth shall be free.” But it only could be enforced in the few Confederate states controlled by Union troops. On June 19, 1865, two-and-a-half years later, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, the last holdout state, and ordered slaveholders there to free their slaves. … read more »
I wish it would rain!
Well, once again, the world has changed completely – overnight. Like many of you, I’m in New York where the smoke filled our air so badly this week that the City basically shut down and we were all told to stay inside and close our windows. Who knew those wildfires in Canada, hundreds of miles away, would have such an intense effect on millions of people in the northeast US? As one of my clients said, it was like a … read more »
What’s love got to do with it? Well, everything!
May 30th was our 10th kidneyversary. ‘What’s that?’ you ask. Well, I’ll tell you! My late husband, Darryl, had kidney failure in March 2012 due to sickle cell disease; so he went on dialysis. For months, he taught 6th grade during the day and then went to dialysis every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 6:00-10:00 pm. The schedule was rigid and grueling. To miss a session could be life-threatening. In his poem about it, “Measuring in Liters,” he wrote, The … read more »
I don’t really want to fight no more…
I’ve been watching a lot of videos of Tina Turner this week. She is so awesome. Other people seem to be focusing on her voice or her hits or her legs or her hair, but I’m focusing on how she kept reinventing her life and writing her own ticket for how she wanted to live. She didn’t let society (or Ike) limit who she was. She didn’t let trauma define her. I want to be like Tina. I want us … read more »
How to Win at Divorce (and Life) … IMHO
A few weeks ago, I attended an online conference called “How to Win At Divorce.” This seemed like a strange proposition. After all, what does it mean to “win” at divorce?? Honestly, I thought the presentations would all be about how to get as much out of your ex as possible, positioning them as the enemy. Thankfully, that’s not what they did. But it made me really think about the question. (Ok, I just asked Chat GPT how to win … read more »
With A Little Help from Our Friends …
Sometimes help comes from unexpected places, like in this delightful post I saw on LinkedIn this week. It is short but uplifting – literally and figuratively! (And don’t you just love how she comes back to say thank you??) Elephant rescue! How have people come through for you at times of need? When my life has been in crisis, I’ve found that friends and family have shown up in amazing ways. But what surprised me was how virtual strangers showed … read more »
The River Bends
Have you ever felt like your whole world was upended? When it felt like the rug was pulled out from under your feet, and the firm ground you thought you were standing on suddenly disappeared? It’s happened to me twice – when my first husband died suddenly in 2001, and 3 years ago when my second husband, Darryl Alladice, died in the beginning of the Covid pandemic. When some big (often unexpected) life event would happen Darryl would say, “The river bends.” Well, … read more »
The Fight!
My CUNY Law students had a fight in class last week. 😡 We were talking about a case that’s before the Supreme Court challenging the Indian Child Welfare Act (more about that another time) and one of the students brought up a case that’s been in the news of a US soldier who abducted an Afghani baby girl. Another student said, “There’s an argument to be made that a girl will have a better upbringing in the US than in … read more »
High conflict couple + Mediation = Wha???
I’ve done 2 great interviews in the last few weeks! The first was an amazing podcast interview with Andrea Rappaport and Morgan Stogsdill, Esq. on their podcast, How Not to Suck at Divorce. They were curious about how I handle mediations with high conflict couples. I told them that you don’t have to agree on any of the substantive stuff – only that you will each come to mediation in good faith. And we talked about 3 action steps that you can take while … read more »
Sometimes Hope is In a Cowbell.
Remember three years ago, when the shutdown happened and we were hiding in our apartments, scared to go outside… Scared to breathe on each other. Scared to go to the grocery store. Scared we were going to run out of toilet paper. (smile). Remember all of that? I sat down to watch Jeopardy! the other day, noticing that it was light out because of Daylight Savings Time. I looked at the cow bell and the pliers still sitting on the shelf … read more »
