I wish it would rain!

June 12, 2023 By Joy Rosenthal

Well, once again, the world has changed completely – overnight. Like many of you, I’m in New York where the smoke filled our air so badly this week that the City basically shut down and we were all told to stay inside and close our windows. Who knew those wildfires in Canada, hundreds of miles away, would have such an intense effect on millions of people in the northeast US? As one of my clients said, it was like a combination of 9/11 (the smoke) and Covid (dangerous to go outside). Déjà vu all over again.

It’s confusing because for the past few years, being outside has been our safe space. But this week,  that was dangerous, too. I don’t know about you, but I really like breathing, haha. We need fresh air! I hope they can put out the fires soon!  The air here is much better today, but I’m still feeling shaken and vulnerable and imagine that you might be, also. I’ve been playing “I Wish It Would Rain” by the Temptations all week. They were so far ahead of their time! (I’m showing my age here…) haha.

On a totally different note, I wanted to share another podcast interview I did recently – with Stacy Francis on the Financially Ever After: Widowhood Podcast.

Stacy heads up Francis Financial, which focuses on financial planning and management for women who are divorcing or are widowed. She also started Savvy Ladies, a non-profit that provides free 1:1 financial mentoring where they match women with a volunteer financial advisor. It’s really a great resource. As you can tell from our discussion, Stacy and I have great admiration for each other.

Stacy was really interested in hearing about how I stitched my life together after each experience of widowhood. I talked about the similarities and the differences, how I had to draw on resources I didn’t know I had each time, and how friends came through in unexpected (and really loving) ways. I also talked about learning to be patient with myself – which isn’t easy!!!

You can listen to our conversation here. If you’re going through a time of transition or loss, I hope this interview will be a help to you.
