Communication is so tricky – it has to go through many steps. Even the simplest phone conversation may have a lot of components: My thoughts (Perhaps I’m picturing my very sweet little black dog rolling on her back in the grass in Prospect Park, in Brooklyn.) My words (So I say to you, “My dog is in the park.”) (am I saying what I mean?) Then it goes through the air or over the wires up to the satellites and … read more »
There Comes a Time … (Please share)
I try to keep this post focused on issues of family law and conflict resolution (as well as some personal reflection), but today I’m going a little bit off-script. Project 2025, that 900-page document published by the Heritage Foundation, lays out the blueprint for the Trump agenda, and threatens all of us – but particularly many of the families that my practice serves – women, queer folks, independent thinkers, folks who stand up for what they believe in. It threatens … read more »
Let it Simmer
“Is this a stereotype?” I asked. “Or is it true that Indian food takes a long time to cook?” I was sitting with my friend, Sethu, in a coffee shop, and we were talking about that never-ending work-life balance. (Perhaps I should mention here that, in my mind, saag paneer and rice is about as perfect as food can get.) “No, it’s true,” she said. “My mom taught me some tricks to make it simpler like doing food prep for … read more »
In the Blink of an Eye!
I hope you had a good summer! Congratulations to your parents for getting through another summer and another first day of school. Each new school year is a milestone, reminding you that your kids are getting older, while you’re staying the same age. Funny how that happens! (smile). I’ve been musing, with Kamala’s meteoric rise, about how profoundly and permanently things can change in an instant — Sometimes bringing hope and joy back! This is true in politics and world … read more »
Divorce in the Black … and a good movie!
Now and then I like to look at how divorce is treated in popular culture – so this week, I watched Tyler Perry’s new film, Divorce in the Black, on Amazon Prime. I generally think of Tyler Perry as being brilliant, pointed, and hilarious – but this film was none of those things. The title is a riff on being ‘in the black’ as opposed to being ‘in the red,’ which I took to mean that divorce could be a … read more »
Protecting the rights of marriage – what you can do
Last week, I mentioned that a client wrote to me concerned about the future of same-sex marriage and the possibility that the Obergefell decision could be overturned. My client isn’t alone. Almost 80% of married same-sex couples reported the same concern in a recent study conducted by UCLA’s Williams Institute and reported in the Los Angeles Times. Marriage changed couples’ lives in all kinds of positive ways – they had increased feelings of safety and security, increased financial stability, legal … read more »
Is Marriage Equality a Given?
A few weeks ago, a client wrote and said that she was having trouble sleeping at night, worried about what would happen to her rights as a married person if the Obergefell decision was overturned. (And that was before the Supreme Court decisions were issued in the last few weeks!) I thought it would be a good idea for this week’s post, but it’s a long answer, so I’ll continue it next week. History Let’s start by going way back to 1996 … read more »
Take a Stand!
Today I am thinking about when to be neutral and when to take a stand. My career as a divorce mediator depends on my ability to embrace the concept of both/and – that is, to really try to understand where each person is coming from and why they feel the way they do. I also value diversity inclusivity and an open dialog. I believe strongly in the dignity of every human being. These are core values for me, and I … read more »
Pride in the Pride!
It’s Gay Pride Month! Happy Pride! But did you know that humans aren’t the only animals who are gay (at least at times)? According to Nature magazine, same-sex sexual activity has been observed in over 1,500 species. But wait, there’s more! There are also several transgender species! Some fish are born one sex and change to the other later in life. Frogs, too. Some are hermaphroditic, meaning that they are both sexes at the same time. Nature loves diversity! Here’s … read more »
Always on Watch…
We all know that June 19th is celebrated as Juneteenth in the United States, but you might not know that it has also been designated as World Sickle Cell Awareness Day by the United Nations and the World Health Organization. Sickle Cell affects people from many different parts of the globe, but in the US, most people who have it come from African ancestry. This has led to disparities in the amount of funding available for research and in treatment … read more »
